Iraqi Foreign Policy During the Cold War (1958–1990)

The Department of History, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Center at the College of Arts, held a workshop titled “Iraqi Foreign Policy During the Cold War (1958–1990),” presented by Asst. Lecturer Ayat Ahmed Abdulwahab. The workshop discussed the major shifts in Iraq’s foreign policy after the 1958 revolution, its position within the Cold War context, and its relations with the Eastern and Western blocs. It highlighted Abd al-Karim Qasim’s non-aligned policy with a tendency toward the Soviet Union, followed by later political changes, and the pragmatic approach adopted in the 1980s during the Iran–Iraq War.
